Setting Your Family Up for Success with Routines

Some people cringe when they hear the word “routines” while others find it almost as comforting as snuggling under their favorite soft blanket with a mug of hot cocoa. As adults, we tend to equate the word “routines” with a feeling, and either avoid them for fear of feeling restricted, or adhere to them for the feelings of comfort and safety. Early in life, however, routines can be survival. For a child, having a great daily routine leads to a more successful day, week, month, and year. The alternative can be a day, week, month, and year with more struggle, frustration, and uncertainty.

An Attitude of Gratitude

This saying has been written on my heart for years – and I keep thinking that someday I will get around to ordering the word-art letters so I that I can put it over the patio door in our home. With Thanksgiving approaching, we may individually, or as a family, turn our thoughts to the many blessings we enjoy.

But how do we teach our children to have an “attitude of gratitude” all year long? We hardly get the chance to put the Thanksgiving leftovers away before the media begins to bombard us with the message of Black Friday, and the number of “shopping days left until Christmas”.

What’s For Dinner?

If your family is anything like mine, one of the first questions after our children come home from school is, “What’s for dinner?” I usually have very little time to think up and prepare a healthy home-cooked meal due to after-school activities and commitments. Therefore, I try to gather some ideas to have on hand that fit the time crunch.

A family favorite in our house is Chicken Fried Rice. It is a very quick “throw together” meal that is healthy and inexpensive–three wins in my book!
